Excavation Slope Guide

OSHA 1926.652 Requirements
Stable Rock 90° • No setback
Type A Soil 53° • ¾:1 ratio
Type B Soil 45° • 1:1 ratio
Type C Soil 34° • 1½:1 ratio
Formulas
Setback = Height × Slope Ratio
Top Width = Base Width + (2 × Setback)
Slope Ratios
Type A ¾:1 → 0.75m per 1m
Type B 1:1 → 1m per 1m
Type C 1½:1 → 1.5m per 1m
Stable Rock 0:1 → Vertical walls
Proper sloping prevents collapse. Inspect daily, follow OSHA requirements.

Soil Classification

Stable Rock
90° slope • No setback required • Vertical excavation acceptable
Type A Soil
53° slope • ¾:1 ratio • Setback = Height × 0.75
Type B Soil
45° slope • 1:1 ratio • Setback = Height × 1.00
Type C Soil
34° slope • 1½:1 ratio • Setback = Height × 1.50
