Severity Rate Formula Guide

Severity Rate = (Lost Work Days × Multiplier) ÷ Total Hours

Days away from work due to injury

Interpretation
Lower rate = Less severe injuries

Industry Benchmarks:

  • Construction: 1.5 - 3.0
  • Manufacturing: 1.0 - 2.5
  • Healthcare: 2.0 - 4.0
  • Retail: 1.5 - 3.5
Severity Rate measures how severe workplace injuries are. Rates above 3.0 indicate high severity incidents.
